The 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea offers a timely opportunity to revisit one of the most foundational statements of the Christian faith. Most believers have heard of the Nicene Creed and can recall many of its familiar phrases; yet few grasp the rich theological and biblical truths behind each word. This book serves as an introduction to the Nicene Creed, offering phrase-by- phrase commentary that explains its historical background, theological depth, and biblical roots-while also commending its enduring relevance for the Church today.

The Nicene Creed is an immensely important text for the life of the church and yet it is a creed that many know little about. What is the Nicene Creed? Is it biblical? And does it continue to be relevant for us today? These are the very questions Dr. David Robinson addresses in this fine study. In A Pattern of Sound Words, one will find an engaging and accessible guide for understanding the Nicene Creed. Through extensive engagement with biblical texts and historical theological sources, Robinson shows the Nicene Creed’s alignment with the teachings of Scripture and the historic witness of the church. He therefore displays that this Creed continues to be deeply relevant for Christians today.

Creeds and confessions anchor Christians in foundational truth amid the restless tides of uncertainty. Aware of this need, Robinson turns his historical and theological lens upon the Nicene Creed, magnifying its depth and enduring relevance. Through his careful study, readers gain a clearer vision of this ancient confession as a timeless, biblical compass for faith and fidelity—one capable of steadying the soul through every spiritual storm.

On the 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed, Pastor David Robinson provides a very accessible volume detailing the historic realities occurring in the 4th century and earlier that precipitated the need for a creedal statement. He ably guides the reader on the Creed’s critical explanation of the Godhead, Christ, and the Trinity at a time when the Arian heresy was beginning to be prevalent.

Our own Fellowship of Churches completed a thorough revision of our Affirmation of Faith in late 2025 and often referred to and appreciated the Nicene Creed among other historic creeds and confessions. Our motivation to revise was to prepare our churches for the 21st century. I can only imagine the Church Fathers were similarly motivated to prepare a creed that would ensure orthodoxy among Christ’s church for centuries to come.

My thanks to David for focusing our attention on what we ‘believe and confess’ as essential and helping to make a 1700-year-old creedal statement accessible to a new generation.
